Protesters 'occupy' PR department

Anti-government protesters have occupied the area outside the Government Public Relations Department in Phaya Thai district.

The department is on Soi Aree Samphan off Rama VI Road near the Finance Ministry, which was seized by a thousand or more protesters led by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban earlier on Monday afternoon.

Reports said Mr Suthep asked former Democrat MP Panich Vikitsreth to take another group of protesters and lead them to occupy the area outside the adjacent PR department. He also asked for male volunteers to accompany Mr Panich.

Protesters stayed outside the building and were instructed not to enter the department compound and to remain peaceful. There were no reports of clashes between the protesters and security officers.

Mr Panich said the congregation of protesters was a symbolic move to emphasise the fact that the PR department should be the mouthpiece of the people. He said he had made it clear to protesters that no one should enter the compound to allow officials working at the department to get on with their jobs.
