Capo: Other countries welcome election

Other countries are concerned about the political situation in Thailand and support the decision to call a general election under a democratic system, Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (Capo) director Surapong Tovichakchaikul said on national television on Wednesday.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul, as head of the Capo, said many countries, including the United States, China, Germany, Canada and New Zealand, have recently shown  concern about the political conflict in Thailand.

"Foreign countries are worried that the situation could escalate to violence and they would like the Thai government to hold talks and find peaceful solutions with its opponents.

"They back the idea of holding a general election and hope that it will proceed smoothly so peace and stability will be restored in the country as quickly as possible," Mr Surapong said.
