Supreme Commander Tanasak Patimapragorn did not join the visit.

He was attending other engagements and sent his deputy Worapong Sanganetra instead.

Ms Yingluck, who is also defence minister, presented flowers to Gen Prem who, in turn, gave her and the top brass neck ties encased in long paper envelopes printed with a message encouraging the recipient to repay a debt of gratitude to the country.

After 15 minutes, Ms Yingluck and the armed forces leaders left Gen Prem's residence. They stopped at the Army Club in Thewes where the defence leaders conveyed to Ms Yingluck a New Year wish.

Ms Yingluck and the leaders spent more than one hour discussing the political situation, a source said.

She also said Gen Prem had advised her to follow His Majesty the King's guidance in performing her duty.

The prime minister went to the city police headquarters and visited officers who provided her with a security escort. Today, Gen Prem will receive more New Year guests including Privy Councillor Surayud Chulanont and Deputy Defence Minister Gen Yuthasak Sasiprapa.
