Poll: 20% of city residents joined rallies

Eighty percent of the polled Bangkokians said they had not taken any part in the Bangkok shutdown campaign by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) between Jan 13 and 15, Nida Poll reported on Friday.

The pollster said 19.90% of them admitted they had participated in the shutdown rallies to pressure caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her cabinet members to step down.

Nida Poll, of the National Institute of Development Administration, said it surveyed Bangkok residents on  “Bangkokians and the shutdown”, interviewing 1,975 people on Jan 15 and 16.

Asked which rally sites they joined, 21.47% of the respondents who admitted taking part said Pathumwan intersection, 20.94% of them pointed to Ratchaprasong intersection, 14.66% said Victory Monument, 13.26% said Lat Phrao intersection, 11.87% said Asoke intersection, 9.95% said Lumpini Park, 4.36% said Chaeng Wattana road near Vibhavadi Rangsit road and 3.49% said Chaeng Wattana road in front of the Department of Special Investigation.

Bangkok has an official population of 8,249,117 residents, while the greater Bangkok area contains some 14,565,520 - according to the 2010 Census.
