The group comprising businessmen from the Silom, Phetchaburi and Yaowarat areas yesterday gathered in front of the Indian embassy on Soi Sukhumvit 23 to show their support for Mr Satish.

The Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) has ordered authorities to proceed with his deportation.

The CMPO, led by caretaker Labour Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, has accused Mr Sehgal, chairman of the Thai-Indian Business Association, of violating the emergency decree by joining the People's Democratic Reform Committee's anti-government protest.

Mr Sehgal yesterday said he had not yet received a formal letter ordering his deportation from the CMPO, although he hoped the caretaker government would review its decision to deport him.

Mr Sehgal, who has made Thailand his home for more than 50 years, brushed aside the government's argument that he is a foreigner and should, therefore, steer clear of Thai politics. He said he was appointed adviser to commerce ministers by previous governments. He also dismissed rumours that he was applying for asylum with the Indian embassy.

Mr Sehgal on Friday announced he would end his political activity.
