Election validity court ruling due Friday

Election validity court ruling due Friday

The Constitution Court will deliver an oral statement and ruling on the validity of the Feb 2 election on Friday, reports said.

The president of the Constitution Court announced that the ruling would be made on March 21 after key witnesses testified in the case.

The court heard evidence from Pornphet Wichitcholchai, an Ombudsman, Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana, who testified on the prime minister's behalf, and Election Commission chairman Supachai Somcharoen.

The Constitution Court hearing was held at the request of the Office of the Ombudsman following a complaint filed by Kittipong Kamolthammawong, a law lecturer at Thammasat University. Mr Kittipong argues that flaws in the way the Feb 2 poll was conducted mean that it breached the constitution.

After hearing the witnesses' testimony, the court set March 21 at 11am, to deliver an oral statement and make a ruling on whether the general election was invalid.

The court will also allow Mr Pongthep to submit an additional statement by Mar 20.
