Coronation wellwishers must ‘stay mum on politics’

PRACHAUP KHIRI KHAN - Authorities have asked the public to refrain from making political statements when they join celebrations for His Majesty the King on Coronation Day tomorrow.

Prachuap Khiri Khan governor Veera Sriwatthanatrakul urged people not to blow whistles or make booing noises during the celebrations in Hua Hin district, saying they should show unity in front of His Majesty.

The King will grant an audience to members of the royal family and civil servants at the Klai Kangwon Palace, where Their Majesties the King and Queen are in residence. His Majesty will deliver a speech at the Rajpracha Samakhom Pavilion, which will be broadcast live on television from 10.30am.

Well-wishers will be able to catch a glimpse of the King as the royal motorcade passes by.

Mr Veera said army and police personnel will conduct strict searches for weapons and other prohibited items to ensure tight security.

About 80 first-aid workers from the provincial health office will be deployed at five spots in downtown Hua Hin to provide any necessary medical treatment to well-wishers.

Authorities have advised the elderly to come to the celebrations with relatives or someone who can take care of them, as high temperatures are expected tomorrow.

The governor also said well-wishers should wear yellow outfits to pay respect to the King.

Prachuap Khiri Khan police chief Thanet Sunthornsuk advised people to claim a position along the royal motorcade route before 6am.

About 1,500 police will be deployed to help direct traffic in the area, almost double the number which stood guard during celebrations for the King's birthday on Dec 5 last year, he said.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to join the event tomorrow.

Motorists driving past Klai Kangwon Palace have been urged not to slow down to take photos as it could worsen traffic congestion.

Those who want to avoid downtown Hua Hin can use the Phetkasem bypass route, Pol Maj Gen Thanet said.

About 800 metres of inbound lanes on Phetkasem Road in front of the palace will be blocked off ahead of tomorrow's celebrations.

Nine parking areas have been arranged to accommodate up to 2,000 vehicles in the north of Hua Hin. The locations are the Venezia, Dusit Hotel, Makro Hua Hin, Tavimook Sport Complex, Hua Hin Commercial College, Hua Hin Hospital, Hin Num Sai Suay Hotel, Had Sawan Hotel and Sathukan Witthaya High School.

Another nine parking areas have been set aside in the west and south of Hua Hin. They are Wat Hua Hin, the municipal waterworks, Hua Hin Grand Hotel and Plaza, Huahin Vitthayalai School, the Market Village, Hua Hin School, Phae Mai Market, 48 Rai Market and Hua Hin Soi 68.
