New date set for election talks

The Election Commission (EC) has set next Wednesday for talks with acting caretaker Prime Minister Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan on organising a new general election.

EC secretary-general Puchong Nutrawpong said on Thursday that a royal decree for a new election  will be discussed with Mr Niwatthamrong on Wednesday.

The caretaker government proposed holdig the meeting on Friday, but it was not possible as the election commissioners will be attending the Royal Ploughing ceremony that day, he said.

A new general election was proposed for July 20 at the meeting on April 30 between the EC and the government. They planned to meet last Tuesday but the meeting was deferred as the EC had to settle differences with the Council of State on the content of the draft decree.

Another key issue in talks next week will be whether Mr Niwatthamrong will have authority to forward the decree to His Majesty the King for endorsement, beause he is only acting caretaker prime minister, he added.
