Five TV stations to resume broadcasts

The National Peace and Order Maintaining Council (NPOMC) has ordered TV Channels 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 to resume normal programming on Friday evening, Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said.

Mr Takorn said the Thai PBS channel was still shut down.

Thai PBS earlier attempt to continue its broadcasts through the YouTube video-sharing website after the NPOMC suspended all normal television and radio broadcasting following the miltary coup.

Mr Takorn denied this was the reason for the continuation of the ban. He said an order concerning Thai PBS might be issued later.

The NPOMC has ordered internet service providers to block broadcast-sharing attempts on the net, he said.

The NPOMC's broadcasting ban remains in effect for radio stations and other television stations.

Mr  Takorn said the NPOMC instructed the NBTC to follow its orders to shut down internet-based television and political web pages.

The NBTC on Friday morning conveyed the NPOMC's order for internet service providers to prevent the transmission of any "misleading information that may cause unrest".

Digital TV operators are seeking permission to resume normal broadcasting and promised to air the NPOMC's announcements live.
