Yingluck 'not under house arrest'

Former PM under guard but allowed to move around

Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra is still in Bangkok and is not under house arrest, a reliable source at the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) said on Wednesday.

Since being released from the 1st Division, King's Guard, barracks Ms Yingluck has not been seen in public, giving rise to speculation that the younger sister of former prime minister Thaksin is confined to her Bangkok home.

The senior source said she was not under house arrested and is allowed to travel anywhere in the country, but cannot leave Thailand.

However, she does have to to inform the NCPO if she wants to go outside Bangkok, the source added.

''Former prime minister Yingluck can go anywhere except outside the country. But she prefers to stay in Bangkok because her son is studying here,'' the source said. ''If she goes anywhere, she has to tell the council.''

Army deputy spokesman Col Winthai Suwaree on Monday confirmed her release from the 1st division barracks but declined to give any details.

The source said she was held in army custody only one night at the 1st division, after reporting to the NCPO on Friday.

Soldiers from the 1st division are stationed outside her house in Soi Yothin Pattana 3 in Bung Kum district, he said.

Yingluck was formerly army chief and coup leader Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha's superior  when she was the defence minister, before being disquaified from office by the Constitutional Court.

Soldiers were closely monitoring all people released from detention and taking pictures of them to be included in their reports to the NCPO, the source said.
