BTS hosts troops to curb protest

Troops will be deployed at all BTS skytrain stations on Sunday as part of heightened security measures to handle planned anti-coup protests.

Deputy police chief Somyot Poompanmoung said police and military leaders met on Friday to discuss ways to prevent confrontations between security personnel and demonstrators.

The meeting concluded that police and soldiers would be deployed to all skytrain stations across the city. Skywalks connecting BTS stations and shopping malls would be under close watch.

Pol Gen Somyot, who oversees security affairs, said extra soldiers and police would also be dispatched to five other planned demonstration sites.

The deployments are aimed at maintaining peace and order, he said, adding that all police officers in key strategic locations have been ordered to remain on standby.

The deputy police chief warned that building owners who allow demonstrators to gather on their premises would face legal action for violating orders issued by the military junta.

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) did not want to see any confrontations, as this would carry the risk of injuries and property damage, the deputy police chief said.

In recent weeks, anti-coup demonstrators have mainly converged in areas along the skytrain routes, Pol Gen Somyot noted.

He was due to to hold a meeting on Saturday at the Metropolitan Police Bureau to evaluate the security situation following the arrest of anti-coup activist Sombat Boonngam-among on Thursday night.

Mr Sombat, who had publicly defied an order to report to the NCPO on May 23, was arrested in Chon Buri.

The activist regularly kept in touch with his followers and people opposing the coup through social media channels.

Messages were posted on Facebook on Friday urging coup opponents to congregate at skytrain, subway or Airport Rail Link stations near their homes at 2pm on Sunday.

Five other possible anti-coup gathering venues are Suvarnabhumi airport, McDonald's Ratchaprasong branch, Victory Monument, Siam Paragon and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
