Most people believe former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra will not return to the country by Aug 10 and a majority are certain she will attend her elder brother Thaksin's birthday party in France on July 26, according to a poll by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida).
The poll was conducted on July 18-19 on 1,247 people of various levels of education, ages and occupations throughout the country to gauge their opinion on the National Council for Peace and Order's (NCPO) permission for Ms Yingluck and her son to travel abroad between July 20-Aug 10 despite the fact that the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has ruled there are sufficient grounds to pursue dereliction of duty allegations against her.
The anti-graft body will also recommend the Office of the Attorney General indict her for failing to deal with corruption and losses in the rice-pledging scheme.
On the NCPO's permission for Ms Yingluck and her son to travel abroad, the majority or 52.19% of the respondents said they agreed with the NCPO, reasoning that it is a person's right to do so; she has cooperated well with the NCPO and made no attempts to flee; and there has been no high court order to prohibit her from travelling abroad.
A smaller number of respondents, 39.84%, disagreed with the NCPO, reasoning that the NACC has already recommended Ms Yingluck's indictment for dereliction of duty and that she could flee the legal case - as done by Thaksin, while 7.97% made no comment.
Asked whether they think Ms Yingluck will return to Thailand by Aug 10, most of the respondents or 41% said they believed she would not return by that date, 39.04% thought she would return as promised and 18.96% no comment.
Asked whether they think Ms Yingluck will attend Thaksin's birthday in France on July 26, 77.21% believe she would do so, 9.16% thought she would not and 13.63% no comment.
