Cambodian envoys tout NCPO reforms

Cambodian Defence Minister Tea Banh yesterday insisted the Cambodian government led by Prime Minister Hun Sen understood the political developments in Thailand, especially the military's policy to restore peace and democracy in the country.

Gen Tea Banh said Cambodia has been monitoring political developments in Thailand.

"Prime Minister Hun Sen said he understands the political situation, particularly the regime's resolution to solve problems,'' he said.

Gen Tea Banh arrived in Bangkok yesterday for a two-day visit to discuss bilateral issues with the junta.

His delegation comprises high-ranking military officers including Lt-Gen Hun Manet, the Cambodian premier's son.

Gen Tea Banh expressed confidence in plans for national reform launched by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). He also acknowledged the NCPO's plan for migrant worker management.

Gen Surasak Karnchanarat, permanent secretary for defence and acting defence minister, who held talks with Gen Tea Banh, said their discussion touched on several bilateral issues, including the countries' preparations for the Asean Economic Community next year.

Gen Surasak said the visit could lead to solutions to several issues, including border disputes and the Preah Vihear temple row.

However, he insisted he did not discuss the Preah Vihear conflict with Gen Tea Banh at the meeting.

"It is not the right time to discuss Preah Vihear. Any issue which could spark conflict will not be raised at the moment,'' Gen Surasak said.

"Based on the International Court of Justice's ruling, we have to talk but not right now. Let's live together happily like before. We can talk about it later,'' Gen Surasak said.

"This visit has strengthened our bilateral relationship, trust and cooperation on border issues, in combating terrorism, solving the illegal migrant workers problem and with drugs,'' he said.

After meeting Gen Surasak and Supreme Commander Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn yesterday, Gen Tea Banh is scheduled to meet NCPO chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha today.
