Bomb attack kills teacher, injures two

A teacher died and two other people were injured following a bomb attack in Pattani's Khok Pho district yesterday, police said.

Patimoh Saemasae, 28, a teacher at Baan Tha Reu School, sustained serious injuries in the blast and later died from her wounds.

Pol Lt Pramote Juichuay from Khok Pho police station said the bomb exploded shortly after 8am.

Lumduan Chuduang, 55, another teacher at the school was also hurt.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Pradit Imsri, 44, who was providing protection to the teachers suffered minor injuries.

Ms Lumduan suffered shrapnel wounds to her body and legs.

She was taken to hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition.

Pol Lt Pramote said the attack occurred when the teachers were on their morning commute.

He said four teachers were riding on motorcycles led by two police officers, also on motorcycles.

Another group of officers were in a pickup truck behind the teachers.

The bomb went off by a bridge on Moo 2 Baan Bangkora tambon Baan Bangkora, Khok Pho district.

Police believe the explosive was packed into a cooking gas cylinder and hidden at the bridge before being detonated by radio signal.

Pol Lt Pramote said it is still unclear who staged the attack.

Teachers have long been a target of attacks by southern insurgents.

Patimoh is the 175th teacher to die as a result of unrest in the South.

Colonel Pramote Phromin, a spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4, yesterday expressed his condolences to the bomb victims.

Col Pramote said his division has ordered state authorities to focus on collecting evidence in the investigation to hunt down the assailants as quickly as possible.

He said officials need to discuss ways to improve security for students and teachers.

He added that particularly stringent measures must be taken to make sure teachers feel safe when they travel to and from work.

Col Pramote also urged activists from not-for-profit organisations, local leaders, the media and members of the public to condemn the assailants for the senseless attack.

Patimoh's relatives took her body to be buried yesterday evening, police said.
