Further easing of martial law on cards

The lifting of martial law in certain areas may be discussed at the first joint meeting of the National Council for Peace and Order and the cabinet on Tuesday at the Army Club, Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said on Sunday.

Ms Kobkarn said emphasis would be placed on tourism provinces where activities against the NCPO and the government have decreased.

She cited as an example the island province of Phuket where the 2014 Asian Beach Games will be held between Nov 14 and 23.

Martial law, which has been imposed since May 20 prior to the May 22 coup by the NCPO, has been lifted in many areas, mostly for the sake of tourism.

The tourism and sports minister, meanwhile, said she was satisfied with the performance of Thai athletes at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, which concluded yesterday, saying they had improved considerably and clinched many medals.
