Police chief told to strip Thaksin of rank

An ex-Democrat list-MP on Sunday said he will ask new police chief Pol Gen Somyos Pumpanmuang to strip Thaksin Shinawatra of his police rank.

Watchara Petchthong said he will send to Pol Gen Somyos a list of 236 police officers whose ranks had been revoked in the past along with the Office of the Ombudsman’s written statements recommending the Royal Thai Police Office (RTPO) strip Thaksin of his police lieutenant-colonel’s rank. It will be sent by post on Monday.

Mr Watchara said the Ombudsman had concluded that the former premier was a convicted criminal and fugitive linked to five criminal cases which met the RTPO’s criteria for the removal of rank.

He threatened to petition the National Anti-Corruption Commission for an investigation of Pol Gen Somyos for malfeasance if he failed to take action against the former premier, a move similar to what he has done with former national police chief Adul Saengsingkaew over his refusal to strip Thaksin of his rank.
