Ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has left Thailand for a holiday in Japan with her brother, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Ms Yingluck, her son Supasek "Nong Pipe" Amornchat, her son's close friend, and other family members took a Thai Airways flight to Japan on Sunday night.
They were escorted by Pol Col Wathanyu Watcharapalothai for protection.
A source close to her said Ms Yingluck had requested permission to leave the country from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
She is expected to spend about three days in Japan, during which time her son and his friend will visit Tokyo Disneyland.
After that, Ms Yingluck and Thaksin will take a private jet from Japan for a merit-making trip in India. Ms Yingluck is scheduled to return to Thailand on Sunday. While in India, she and Thaksin will be joined by former Pheu Thai Party politicians, the source added.
NCPO spokesman Winthai Suwaree confirmed the NCPO had approved Ms Yingluck's trip to Japan. He said Ms Yingluck had followed an NCPO directive to seek its permission before leaving the country.
The trip is Ms Yingluck's second overseas sojourn since the coup. She took Nong Pipe with her to a birthday celebration for Thaksin in France on July 26.
