Wisut, Amnuay up for cabinet

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has proposed for royal endorsement the appointment of two cabinet members, Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula said.

MR Pridiyathorn said the newcomers will assume the posts of deputy agriculture minister and deputy finance minister. He also denied media reports about a rift in the government's economic team.

Wisut Srisuphan has been nominated as deputy finance minister, while Amnuay Patisae has been nominated as deputy agriculture and agricultural cooperatives minister.

Mr Wisut served as acting permanent secretary to the Finance Ministry before his retirement in 2009. Mr Amnuay served briefly as an adviser to MR Pridiyathorn prior to the nomination.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said yesterday the cabinet is expected to appoint members to three proposed advisory committees for the National Reform Council (NRC) next month.

He said committees would work in the three areas of politics. These are national administration and local administration; economy and energy; and social affairs and media reforms. Each committee will have 100 members.

Mr Wissanu said the members of these advisory committees will be selected from among 7,000 people who applied to serve on the NRC. However, the cabinet will make their selection after the NRC's 18 standing committees have chosen their advisers, assistants and specialists from these candidates.

Meanwhile, the National Legislative Assembly yesterday voted to postpone its deliberation of an impeachment request against former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra to Nov 28.

The vote was cast after Ms Yingluck's lawyers told the NLA meeting why the impeachment debate over her role in the rice-pledging scheme should be put off.

They argued the former prime minister received the impeachment report on Nov 7, which was just five days before the planned opening of the debate, while the meeting regulation says she should receive the report at least 15 days before the debate starts.

The NLA was scheduled to open a debate on the impeachment yesterday. A total of 167 NLA members voted in favour of the postponement against 16 who wanted it to go ahead. There were seven abstentions.

The NLA whips earlier proposed the consideration of the impeachment should be put off to allow the ex-premier more time to study the report.
