Students invited to join in reform forums

Students from all universities are invited to take part in forums to be organised by the government and the National Council for Peace and Order and voice their opinions on national reforms, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said on Wednesday.

Gen Prawit, who is also defence minister, said he hoped that large numbers of students would take part.

However, it would be voluntary, not compulsory, attendance, because this is a matter concerning human rights.

The media could play a role in encouraging the students' participation, he said.

Asked if there were worries of possible chaos if a large number of students gathered together, Gen Prawit said he did not think this would happen if their participation is limited to giving opinions on how the country should be reformed.
