Elected PM, cabinet to be proposed

A reform committee will propose direct election of the prime minister, cabinet members and the 350-member House of Representatives while the 154-member Senate will be half-elected.

Prasarn Marukpitak, spokesman of the National Reform Council's political reform committee, said his panel had finalised the proposals to be submitted to the Constitution Drafting Committee on Dec 9 after formally endorsing it on Monday.

The panel wants the prime minister and cabinet members to be directly elected by people. At each election, there will be voting tickets for both MPs and cabinet members.

All 350 MPs will be directly elected with no party-list members, he said.

The MPs will come from constituencies, which of which will have no more than three to reduce influence and vote-buying, Mr Prasarn said.

The appointed 77 senators will come from profession groups or properly registered organisations.
