CDC to set rules for media coverage

The Constitution Drafting Committee next week will meet with media outlets to outline and discuss rules to be imposed upon coverage of the drafting of the new constitution.

CDC deputy chairman Manij Suksomchit said the briefing by chairman Bowornsak Uwanno will Thai and international journalists, columnists and broadcast-programme hosts.

Mr Manij said the media will be given the conditions under which it can cover the drafting process beginning Jan 12. It also will be given an opportunity voice their opinions of the restrictions.

The chief rule will be that the media must not do anything considered as disturbing the CDC's work.

The media will not be allowed to take video or still photos of the CDC during its proceedings. Live broadcasts also are prohibited. Photos will be allowed only at the beginning of each daily meeting session.

The media will be banned from the CDC's chamber when the panel considers certain issues pertaining to specific sections or chapters of the new constitution that are deemed sensitive or controversial and requiring of intense debate.

Mr Manij said he expected On-usa Lamliangphol, chairwoman of the National Reform Council's public relations committee, to present a plan to publicise the CDC's progress to the media next week.
