Poll: EC should handle elections

A majority of people want the Election Commission to continue to organise elections, not the Interior or Education ministries, according to the result of a Suan Dusit Poll survey published on Sunday.

The poll was conducted on 1,274 people throughout the country between Jan 3 and 10 after a proposal was made for the Interior and Education ministries to jointly handle elections instead of the EC. The proposal drew wide criticism from the public.

Asked whether the proposal was sound, 62.25% of respondents disagreed, reasoning that elections should be handled by the EC as it is an independent organisation; however 37.75% agreed, saying it could win more credibility from the public.

But 66.67% directly wanted the EC to continue to handle elections; 17.01% wanted the Interior and Education ministries to take joint responsibility; 7.82% were for the Interior Ministry; 4.42% were for the Education Ministry; and, 4.08% said all of them — the EC and the two ministries — should be responsible for handling the polls.
