Poll: Yingluck will be impeached

A majority of people believe most of the NLA members will vote to impeach ex-premier Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday, but the decision will not spark political chaos, according to the findings of a Nida poll released Thursday.

The survey by the National Institute of Development Administration found 60.48% of respondents thought that most of the National Legislative Assembly members would support the impeachment motion against Ms Yingluck, accused of dereliction of duty over the financially disastrous and corruption-ridden rice-pledging scheme.

Only 11.60% of those answering felt most assembly members would vote against it, while 17.04% speculated that most would abstain from voting or not show up for Friday’s impeachment vote.

Asked whether political unrest or violence could break out following the NLA rulings, 45.44% of respondents believed there would be no disorder, and 41.20% said there could be low-level disorder but the government would be able to control it.

The pollster surveyed 1,250 people throughout the country on Jan 20 and 21.

The impeachment motion requires the supporting votes of three-fifths of the 220 NLA members, or 132 members.
