The steering committee is responsible for accelerating state agencies' implementation of policy directives issued by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who also serves as chief of the NCPO, Col Winthai said.

The new restructuring is needed to assist army chief Gen Udomdej Sitabutr, the NCPO secretary-general, and support the work of the NCPO's steering committee.

Gen Prawit called the first meeting of the NCPO's steering panel last Wednesday when he assigned the leaders different tasks in following up on state offices' implementation of government policies.

Gen Prawit himself oversees policies designed to reduce poverty and income discrepancy, and on finance, state enterprises, budgets, and small- and medium-sized entrepreneurs.

Gen Udomdej heads the sub-panel monitoring progress on policies on police affairs, narcotics, security and public administration.

Defence permanent secretary Gen Sirichai Ditthakul chairs a sub-panel for policies related to industry, energy, agriculture, international relations and foreign affairs.

Supreme Commander Gen Worapong Sanganet takes care of policies for tourism, sports, border trade, and special economic areas.
