Jatuporn gets jail for defaming Abhisit

The Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced Jatuporn Prompan, a former Pheu Thai MP and leader of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), to two years in jail without suspension after finding him guilty of defaming then-prime minister Abhsit Vejjajiva in 2009.

The court upheld a lawsuit filed by Mr Abhisit, who said  Mr Jatuporn made defamatory remarks about him in his speeches made on a UDD stage on Oct 11 and 17, 2009.

In his speeches, Mr Jatuporn had accused Mr Abhisit of ordering the killing of the people and obstructing the submission of a petition to His Majesty the King seeking a royal pardon for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The court found Mr Jatuporn guilty of defamation and sentenced him to one year imprisonment on each charge, two years in total without suspension, for the two speeches on Oct 11 and 17, 2009.

Winyat Chartmontree, Mr Jatuporn's lawyer, said he would apply for bail for his client and offer 200,000 baht as collateral.  The court was considering the bail request.
