Ruangkrai turns self in

Pheu Thai Party legal expert, Ruangkrai Leekitwattana, reported to the military on Friday after being called in for an "attitude adjustment" session in Bangkok.

The former Pheu Thai list-candidate was summoned by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and reported to the 11th Army Circle where he was detained for questioning by the military.

Mr Ruangkrai was called in after he reportedly submitted a letter to the US charge d'affaires, W Patrick Murphy, criticising the impeachment proceedings against former premier Yingluck Shinawatra.

The National Legislative Council voted overwhelmingly last month to impeach Ms Yingluck for failing to stamp out alleged corruption in the rice-pledging scheme, a flagship policy of her administration.

She also faces a criminal trial after prosecutors decided on the same day as the impeachment to indict her in the Supreme Court for dereliction of duty over the loss-ridden rice programme. Mr Ruangkrai's letter also allegedly criticised the NCPO's running of the country.

A source said the authorities were looking into whether Mr Ruangkrai had broken any law with the remarks he made in the letter. Under martial law, Mr Ruangkrai can be detained for up to seven days without charge.
