The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) will on March 13 vote on the impeachment case brought against 38 former senators charged with violating the 2007 constitution in their move to make the senate a wholly elected chamber in 2013.

NLA deputy president Surachai Liangboonlertchai said on Tuesday that representatives of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and four accused former senators would present opening statements to the NLA tomorrow.

The charges were brought by the NACC.

NACC member Vichai Vivitsevi will deliver the statement on behalf of the anti-graft panel.

Former Nakhon Phanom senator Wittaya Inala, former Uthai Thani senator Singchai Thungthong, former Mukdahan senator Jitt Sriyoha, and former Nonthaburi senator Direk Thuengfang, who is now a member of the National Reform Council, would also present opening statements.

Mr Surachai said the NLA would take about three hours to consider the statements. Then it would form a nine-member inquiry committee and then vote on the impeachment case for all 38 former senators on March 13.

The former senators were charged with taking unconstitutional action to acquire power as they moved to make the whole Senate an elected body even though the 2007 constitution required the chamber comprise both elected and selected senators in close proportions.

If the NLA finds the charge substantiated, the senators' political rights will be suspended for five years.
