'Popcorn gunman' hearing postponed

'Popcorn gunman' hearing postponed

The first court hearing for the alleged "popcorn gunman" responsible for last year’s shooting at Bangkok’s Laksi intersection was postponed Monday to May 18 at the request of prosecutors.

Examination of evidence was supposed to begin for Vivat Yodprasit, 24, who was indicted for the shooting that occurred Feb 1, 2014. The postponement was the second in the case.

In the incident, a group of members from the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship gathered around 3pm in front of the IT Square shopping centre at the Laksi intersection to support the Feb 2 election.  Shortly afterward, a group of People's Democratic Reform Committee demonstrators arrived at the scene.

The two sides hurled abuse at each other before explosions were heard and a man with a gun hidden in a popcorn bag emerged and opened fire at random, wounding many people.

Mr Vivat, the alleged "popcorn gunman", later was arrested and charged with attempted murder, violating the emergency decree, and illegal weapons possession.

The prosecution today asked for another postponement to revise its indictment because Akaew Sae Liew, 72, one of those wounded in the shooting, died in September after being paralysed for seven months.

The revision is required to additionally charge Mr Vivat with murder. The court rescheduled the examination of evidence for May 18.
