Seven student activists detained for displaying an anti-coup banner in Khon Kaen were released on bail on Saturday morning.

Police allowed the Khon Kaen University students to be released on bail after they placed 7,500 baht each as surety. They were freed on condition that they would not violate the ban imposed on political gatherings by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), Thai media reported.

The students from the so-called Dao Din group were released at 9.30am on Saturday and were ordered to report to police again on June 8.

After their release, the seven young men read a statement they had written while in detention and sang a song in front of the police station. A crowd of local residents and people from nearby northeastern provinces arrived to offer their encouragement.

The students were arrested on Friday afternoon after rallying at the Khon Kaen Democracy Monument on the first anniversary of the coup. During the gathering, they carried a large banner denouncing the coup-makers.

During their detention on Friday, a group of fellow university students also showed up to give their moral support.

Other anti-coup demonstrations on Friday included a gathering at the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre in Bangkok where 38 people were detained. They have also been released.
