NSC chief sidesteps questions over students

National Security Council chief Anusit Kunakorn has sidestepped questions about the military court's decision to release the 14 students detained for defying a political gathering ban, saying he wants to put the matter to rest.

Mr Anusit said the NSC did not report anything about the 14 students during today's cabinet meeting.

Asked what security officials would do if the 14 students continue to carry out their political activities, Mr Anusit did not reply directly to the question.

He said Thai people ignored laws and regulations, resulting in an undisciplined society.

"The government is duty bound to lay down rules and regulations for the people to follow, not so that any particular groups of people have the privilege to do anything they want," said Mr Anusit.

"In the NSC's view, all social problems in the news derive from violations of law and order. Problems with  influential groups, use of violence, illegal fishing, human trafficking, the underprivileged being taken advantage of, and others, derive from a lack of discipline and lax law enforcement," he said.

Asked whether the release of the Bangkok 14 would bring about anything favourable, Mr Anusit said he would like the matter to be put to rest, adding that it serves no purpose to foment more hatred in society.

The NSC chief said he stood firmly behind his idea that universities should open academic forums for students and academics to voice their opinions about the country's reform.

Mr Anusit said he also favoured hosting a forum for reporters to speak about their role in the country's future, beginning with those covering the news at Government House.
