Sudarat plays down talk of Pheu Thai leadership role

Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan says she is “baffled” by talk Pheu Thai wants to install her as leader, which could put her in line to become prime minister if the party wins the next general election.

Responding to speculation of strong support from party members, the veteran politician said she does not know what her future holds.

The media has carried mixed reports, with some saying she has the backing of the military and others suggesting Pheu Thai members are behind her.

Khunying Sudarat, a former deputy leader of the Thai Rak Thai party, denied she has been approached by any Pheu Thai figures about a leadership position. “There’s been no talk whatsoever,” she said. “I’m baffled myself.”

She also dismissed reports she has been invited to join the cabinet of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who overthrew the Pheu Thai administration last year, as equally groundless. “There’s no substance in that either,” she said.

Khunying Sudarat was earlier rumoured to have been offered an advisory role by the National Council for Peace and Order.

She also denied having any discussions with the NCPO over the possibility of setting up a so-called national government, which would comprise politicians from the Pheu Thai and Democrat parties, and representatives from other groups.

She said whether she decides to wash her hands of politics or to carry on with her political career, she would rather do so through a democratic process.

Gen Prayut mentioned Khunying Sudarat during a speech last weekend, adding to speculation that the key Pheu Thai figure may be enlisted to join the ranks of his government.
