His Majesty the King on Sunday on Sunday granted an audience to the new cabinet led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at Siriraj Hospital, to allow them to pledge an oath of allegiance before taking up their duties.

The King granted an audience to Gen Prayut and the 19 members of his cabinet at the auditorium room on the 14th floor of the hospital at 17.40pm.

After the ceremony, all cabinet members reportedly returned to Government House except the prime minister.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said Gen Prayut would call a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, an opinion poll suggests most Thais believe the new cabinet will be more effective than the old one.

The survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University was conducted last week to judge public feeling about the new team of economic ministers led by Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak.

It found that 61.47% of the people believe the reshuffle will help to improve the government's performance. However about one-third of those polled felt there would be no improvement, while a small number regarded the reshuffle as a waste of time and money because the economy was being affected by global issues.

Almost three-quarters felt there would be more stability, while two-thirds were confident it would help the economy, tourism and exports.
