A religious ceremony was held at Thammasat University's Tha Phrachan campus on Tuesday morning to mark the 39th anniversary of the Oct 6, 1976 student uprising.

A large number of people turned up for the ceremony, organised by the Democratic Heroes Foundation, relatives of the Oct 6 heroes and some of those who played a leading role in the historic event.

They were asked by the university not to hold a discussion forum.  They could only raise banners and lay  flowers at the October 6 memorial.

On Oct 6, 1976 students from various universities and other protesters were attacked on the campus of Thammasat University and at Sanam Luang while they were demonstrating against the return to Thailand of former military dictator Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn.

Many people were shot, beaten up, killed and left wounded.
