Suthep cleared of defaming Thaksin

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the lower courts' acquittal of former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban of defaming former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

In this case, Thaksin sued Mr Suthep in the Criminal Court accusing him of defamation under Sections 326 and 328 of the Criminal Code for saying during a debate in the House of Representatives and during press interviews that he made calls from overseas to red-shirt rallies because he wanted to return to the country as president.

The Criminal Court ruled that that Mr Suthep had only voiced his opinion, as allowed by Section 329 of the Criminal Code, with no intention of defaming Thaksin. The Appeals Court upheld the ruling.

Thaksin took the case to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court today upheld the two lower courts' acquittal of Mr Suthep.
