NLA endorses new charter court judge

The National Legislative Assembly on Thursday approved the nomination of the secretary-general of the Office of the Constitutional Court, Panya Udchachon, to the court's bench.

The NLA voted 151-28 to endorse his appointment as  judge, as proposed by a selection committee, with 11 abstentions, during a meeting chaired by deputy NLA president Surachai Liangboonlertchai.

Mr Panya will replace Supot Khaimuk, who retired from the bench after turning 70, as a Constitutional Court judge in the field of political science and public administration.

The meeting also set up a 17-member committee to scrutinise the work and ethics records of five people  nominated to fill the five vacant positions on the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

The five nominees are: Withaya Akhompithak, a former auditor-general; Suwana Suwanjutha, permanent secretary of the Justice Ministry; Pol Gen Vacharapol Prasanratchakij, a former acting police chief; Surasak Sriwichien, a former chief justice in the Bangkok South Criminal Court; and Gen Boonyawat Krue-hong, chairman of the committee for the monitoring and assessment of the performance of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission.
