Nepotism not wanted in House, Senate: Nida Poll

A majority of people do not want spouses, parents or children of a candidate to run in elections for the House of Representatives or the Senate at the same time, according to an opinion survey conducted by the National Institute for Development Administration, or Nida Poll.

The poll was carried out on Jan 4-6 on 1,250 people aged 18 and over of all educational levels and occupations throughout the country to compile their opinions on "political position holders and conflicts of interest".

Asked for their opinion on whether spouses, parents or children of a candidate should be barred from running in an election at the same time for the Senate, a majority (60.88%) of the respondents agreed, 37.36% disagreed and others were uncertain.

Asked whether spouses, parents or children of a candidate should be barred from running in an election for the House of Representatives at the same time, 60.88% agreed, 38.16 disagreed and others had no answer.

To the question of whether spouses, parents and children of a candidate running for the House of Represenatives should be barred from running for the Senate, and vice versa, the respondents' answers were similar to those to the first two questions.
