In an oblique reference to Liverpool football club's anthem "You'll never walk alone", the government spokesman has apologised to reporters on behalf of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha who had expressed frustration at them the day before, asking them to "not let the premier walk alone".

In response to Gen Prayut's actions while speaking to reporters at Government House on Tuesday, government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the prime minister had him send an apology. The spokesman said the prime minister was under a lot of pressure from his intention to serve the public interest and solve national problems.

"The prime minister may wonder if he will find himself walking alone when he looks back because most people in Thai society remain silent and only listen. This makes the one who is trying hard to solve problems feel lonely," Maj Gen Sansern said.

He asked reporters to distinguish between right and wrong and refrain from reporting "bad" messages which confuse society and make the people trying to reform the nation feel isolated.

"Do not let the brave and capable persons cope with things alone. Our country otherwise will not be able to overcome this crisis," the spokesman said.

Asked why the prime minister did not apologise by himself, Maj Gen Sansern said he was preoccupied with an earlier scheduled work and needed some time to review and heal that which had hurt him.

The prime minister did not meet reporters on Wednesday.
