Most people still need to know more about draft charter - Poll

Most people say their knowledge and understanding of the new draft constitution is not yet enough to decide whether to vote for or against it, according to an opinion poll by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll.

The poll was conducted between Feb 7-13 on 1,522 people throughout the country to compile their opinions on the public referendum of the new charter tentatively set by the Election Commission for July 31 this year.

To the question of their knowledge and understanding of the draft charter, 45.01% of the respondents said they had fair knowledge of it from news on various media and discussions by people around them; 31.67% said they knew little about it because it is hard to understand and full of contentious points without proper public relations work; 16.10% said they did not know anything about it; and only 7.22% said they had full knowledge and understanding of it.

Asked whether they have had enough knowledge and understanding of the draft charter to the extent that they can vote to accept or reject it, a majority or 69.10% of the respondents said "no" and 30.90% said "yes."

Asked what they want to know about the new draft charter, the respondents said they wanted to know the differences between the old charters and the new draft charter (81.14%); details on rights and liberties of the people (76.15%); the methods of electing the prime minister, MPs and senators (68.46%); details on corruption prevention and penalies on governments and politicians found to have committed graft; and, steps taken in the drafting of the new charter.
