The Constitution Drafting Committee on Thursday defended the charter in the wake of fresh criticism by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

CDC spokesman Norachit Sinhaseni said the draft remained focused on the right of people to take part in politics by directly voting for their representatives to parliament.

Although the Senate will not come through an elected process, senators will represent all professions and groups in the country, he added.

Rights are still given to people to check the state's performance through relevant agencies including the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Office of the Auditor General, he said.

Mr Norachit was reacting to the latest move by Thaksin, who took a swipe at the draft in New York on Wednesday by repeating his message that it would set the country back as it does not represent the will of the people, and he expected it would not be accepted by the international community.

Mr Norachit dismissed concern over reaction from other countries, saying that all facts could be checked by them.

The drafters are revising the draft after comments have been compiled before sending the final version to the government on March 29.
