Pheu Thai's statement 'not against the law'

The Pheu Thai Party has not violated the public referendum law by urging voters to reject the draft charter, because the legslation is still being deliberated by the National Legislative Assembly and has not yet been passed, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Wednesday.

Mr Wissanu was commenting after an election commissioner warned that Pheu Thai might be in breach of the law for issuing a statement calling for the charter's rejection and outlining its reasons on Wednesday.

The party may, however, have violated other laws in issuing its statement he added, but did not elaborate.

"Moreover, people who make criticise the draft charter too much may risk being summoned for 'attitude adjustment'," he said.

"Therefore, having heard the election commissioner's warning, people should be careful in making any comments about it," he said.

Mr Wissanu said he would meet members of the Election Commission next week to discuss what actions should be deemed violating the public referendum law.
