The military has banned a seminar on the draft charter scheduled to be held on Sunday afternoon in Chiang Mai.
Book Re:public, a Chiang Mai book café which organised the seminar, posted on Facebook the 33rd Military Circle told it the "Reading Constitution as Literature and Art" seminar was not allowed to be held.
The speakers at the seminar were to be Pitch Pongsawat and Bandid Chanrojanakij, political-science lecturers at Chualongkorn and Ramkhamhaeng universities respectively, and Tassani Settaseree, a researcher at the Culture Ministry's Office of Contemporary Art & Culture.
Rodjaraeg Wattanapanit, a co-owner of the bookstore, was one of 14 recipients who won the US State Department's International Women of Courage Award this year.
Book Re:public, which stands for "books regarding the public", specialises in literature on contemporary politics and social issues. One of its co-founders had said it had been inspired by Bangkok's bloody street battles of April-May 2010.
Besides selling books and holding seminars once a week, the venue offers a place for college students and young intellectuals to come discuss the kind of democracy they want for the country in the future.
