The former People's Democratic Reform Committee said on Wednesday it supports the proposed new constitution and will explain its stance after this week’s Songkran festival.

Akanat Promphan, secretary-general of the Muan Maha Prachachon for Reforms Foundation, the present name for the PDRC, said the group's key figures considered the draft constitution good enough to suppress corruption.

They also heard from people that they would support the draft in the upcoming referendum and made their decisions without being influenced by political parties, Mr Akanat said.

Saying leader Suthep Thaugsuban would explain the group's stance following the holidays, Mr Akanat said political parties should comment reasonably on the new constitution.

The Pheu Thai Party's remarks on the draft did not relate to its content, but to political interests, he maintained.

Former Democrat MPs formed the PDRC to rally against the previous Pheu Thai government overthrown by the 2014 coup. Mr Akanat said on Wednesday that the PDRC had not fought for any specific party to lead the government, but instead was demanding reform because those in power had abused their authority and tried to avoid responsibility for wrongdoing.

He said the group still supported the junta's national reform efforts before the next general election.
