KHON KAEN - A large crowd of Pheu Thai supporters and former MPs gathered to greet former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra when she arrived at Khon Kaen airport on Monday at the start of a private trip through five northeastern provinces.

Those at the airport included Sermsak Pongpanich, a former deputy interior minister, Thanik Maseepitak, a former party-list MP, Cherdchai Tantisirin, a core member of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, and Piyachai Nachai, chair of the Women's Group of 20 Northeastern Provinces.

Security officers, both in uniform and plainclothes, were deployed around the airport to ensure security.

Pheu Thai supporters from Khon Kaen and nearby provinces packed the airport to greet and take group photographs with Ms Yingluck.

Mr Cherdchai said the former prime minister would visit five northeastern provinces, beginning with Kalasin on Monday, for a private tour.

He did not name the other four provinces, saying the itinerary was drawn up by Ms Yingluck herself.
