Blacklisted politicians, activists free to leave

Some previously blacklisted political figures now can go abroad freely again, after the military regime officially lifted its two-year travel ban.

The new directive will lift a ban imposed the travel ban on 155 people with political ties.

The new order was published in the Royal Gazette on Tuesday night and takes effect Wednesday. It specifically revokes Order 21/2557 by the National Council for Peace and Order, issued the day after the May 22, 2014 military coup.

It prohibited 155 "certain individuals summoned to report to the NCPO" from leaving Thailand without specific permission from the NCPO chief, Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The list consisted mostly of Pheu Thai MPs and leaders of civil society. Many figures have slipped out of the country to seek asylum abroad, but most were not specifically on the revised travel-ban list.

The announcement cited what it called the need to promote reconciliation and unity among Thais as a reason for the lifting of the travel restrictions. It also referred to cooperation from the public in complying with measures to maintain peace and order.

According to the new Royal Gazette announcement, the travel ban remains in effect for those who are facing court proceedings, who can only get permission to travel from the court. That includes former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, currently on trial for malfeasance at the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders.

After she was recently denied permission to travel, the European Parliament sent a delegation to meet the former leader in Bangkok.

Also still on the no-travel list are "those who are summoned by the NCPO to report themselves".

Those who violate the NCPO orders governing national security, maintaining public order, and conditions of release for individuals who have reported to the NCPO need to ask for permission from the NCPO head prior to travelling.
