Five hurt in Pattani insurgent shooting attack

PATTANI — Five people were injured after suspected insurgents sprayed bullets at a grocery store in Khok Pho district on Sunday.

Khok Pho police were informed of the shooting at Moo 1 village of Ban Mae Kung in Kuan No Ree sub-district in the afternoon. On arrival they found a pool of blood at a table in front of the grocery. Ten spent AK-47 bullet cartridges were found on the road about three metres away.

Police said 10 people were watching a muay thai boxing match on television when four men arrived on two motorcycles, and the pillion passengers armed with AK-47 opened fire at them, before fleeing. The assailants later attacked a group of teenagers who were sitting at a roadside pavilion about one kilometre from the grocery, but no one was hurt.

One of the five injured was Pol Sub Lt Putthiset Srisuwan, 66, who sustained serious gunshot wounds to the abdomen. The other four men, all civilians, were shot in the leg.

Pol Maj Gen Tanongsak Wangsupa, chief of Pattani police, said after the twin attacks security officers had cast a net to trap the assailants. It was believed the attacks were in retaliation for a government force killing four members of an armed unit of the RKK separatist movement on Wednesday when they raided their temporary camp in mountainous Chanae district of Narathiwat.
