NARATHIWAT - Two men were slightly wounded in an explosion of a car bomb, which caused damage to some roadside vending stalls, in Sungai Kolok district on Sunday morning, police said.

Pol Col Kong-ath Suwankham, the Sungai Kolok police chief, said the incident occurred at about 6.10am on a road between Bang Sungai Kolok School and an operation base of a platoon or the Narathiwat Task Force 33 in Sungai Kolok Municipality.

A border patrol police's bomb disposal team and police investigators rushed the scene after being reported on the incident.

According to accounts from eyewitnesses, a man drove a Mitsubishi Titan pick-up loaded with a home-made bomb to a row of roadside vending stalls and left it there.  The man was then whisked away on a motorcycle driven past the spot by his colleague.

Four policemen patrolling on two motorcycles tried to stop the two for questioning, but they sped away.

About three minutes after that, the bomb in the pick-up truck went off.

Two men, Chaiwit Areekulchai, 40, and Sakiran Muso, 19, were slightly wounded in the explosion and admitted to the district hospital.

Nine goods vending stalls were damaged the pick-up truck that was loaded with the bomb was destroyed.

The impact of the explosion also shattered glass windows of Ban Sungai Kolok School, Plaza Hotel and commercial buildings nearby.
