Bomb kills one soldier, wounds three in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT -- An army chief warrant officer was killed and a major and two sergeants wounded when a bomb exploded under their vehicle on a village road in Rangae district on Wednesday.

Pol Capt Apichart Dolo, deputy chief investigator of Rangae police station, said the attack occurred about 11.20am near the entrance to Darul Hikmah School at Ban Pumo in tambon Kalisa.

Seven soldiers of Santisuk Company 402, members of a psy-ops team, were leaving the school on  two pick-up trucks intending to return to their base at Wat Rom in Rangae district.

A landmine buried in the road was detonated remotely as one of the trucks went over it.

The explosion wounded the four soldiers inside the truck -- Maj Krit Meeboon, 44, the team leader, Sgt Amnuay Phomngam, 39, Sgt Jirawat Moonkham, 29, and Chief Warrant Officer Ekaphop Phuphat, 33, the driver.

The wounded were admitted to Rangae Hospital where CWO Ekaphop was later pronounced dead.
