Pattani blast kills officer, injures 3

PATTANI — A policeman was killed and two others and a civilian were injured when a bomb exploded near a mosque in Muang Pattani on Sunday evening.

The three policemen from Muang Pattani police station were patrolling the area opposite the Pattani Central Mosque on Yarang Road when a bomb went off in front of a commercial building at about 7pm. The device was thought to have been hidden under a table outside the building.  

The blast seriously injured Pol Sgt Maj Anurak Rakbut and police lance corporals Wichakorn Setthakul and Surasak Parnsung. A bystander Ya Morlor sustained non-life threatening injuries. 

Pol Sgt Maj Anurak was later pronounced dead at Muang Pattani hospital. 

The bomb caused damage to at least three buildings and three motorcycles parked in the area. Police are inspecting the scene and interviewing witnesses.
