NARATHIWAT -- A woman was shot dead in a ride-by attack in Sungai Kolok district on Tuesday morning. A handwritten note found near her body said it was an act of reprisal, police said.

The body of the woman, Waewta Chanthae, 35, of Tak Bai district, was found on the side of the road in front of Ban Pupo School in tambon Muno  about 7.30am.

A note written in  Thai  was found near her body.  It said:  "This is in revenge for the people of Bannang Sata, whose mosque was attacked with an M79 by state officials."

Police said the woman was travelling on a motorcycle to Sungai Kolok when attacked.

She was followed by two men on another motorcycle.  In front of the school, the pillion rider fired three shots at her with a pistol, hitting her in the back, right arm and head, killing her instantly.

Police were investigating.
