80kg bomb found in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT -- A combined military-police unit scouring a thick bush near a village in Rueso district has found an 80-kilogramme bomb buried in the ground early Sunday.

The search, led by Col Sithisak Jenbanchong, commander of the 41st Ranger Regiment, was launched at 1.30am on information received from Abdulateh Riang, a bomb maker of the RKK insurgent group, who was arrested on Aug 4 with two 80-kg home-made bombs.

Mr Abdulateh told the authorities that some locally-improvised bombs had been hidden in the bush near Lueso village in tambon Riang.

In the search of the bush with mine detectors, the government force found an 80kg bomb made with a gas cylinder buried in the ground.

The device was destroyed by a bomb disposal team.

The authorities also took Abdulrohman Abuwa, 34, from a house in the village for interrogation. Mr Abdulrohman was accused by Mr Abdulateh of being the keeper of five military-grade guns for the RKK. The weapons were to be used for insurgency operations.
